The SLK-Class races to 60 mph in just over seven seconds this year, but some think the exhaust note doesn't sound baaaad enough on start from a standstill, so Mercedes is working on putting a bit more roar into it. Overall, the SLK-Class is a hoot to drive and its 200 pound-feet of torque, available across an incredibly wide rpm range, make it a choice vehicle for carving through traffic or up a spiraling mountain road. The steering is precise, the engine is eager and willing, and the suspension is wonderfully damped. Mercedes got the recipe right the first time with excellent steering, a powerful engine and a smooth suspension. While Mercedes-Benz product planners still expect automatics to account for a full 80 percent of North American SLK-Class sales, at least one-in-five buyers still appreciate the old-fashioned approach to driving enthusiasm. Of course, an automatic transmission is still available, but it's now listed as a $900 option (an option which also costs the car 61 pounds of added curb weight). Raising and lowering consists of pressing one button on the center console.įor 1999, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is equipped with a manual transmission as standard equipment. Unlike its competitors from BMW, Porsche and Mazda, however, the little Mercedes has a retractable steel roof that, when up, makes the car seem as tight as an E-Class sedan. The SLK-Class is a roadster, which means that it has two seats and a top that folds down. The SLK-Class has a decidedly playful countenance that will undoubtedly charm some buyers out of the BMW showrooms that those looking for a fun, sporty car have been frequenting for so long. Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz was still not the marque that young professionals looking for a good time were likely to think of first.Īll of that changed with the introduction of the SLK-Class last year. The result of that decision brought us the fabulous C- and E-Class cars, which made the company and its offerings seem less stuffy. A few years ago, the gang at the three-pointed star decided that it was time to ditch their dowdy image and begin attracting younger buyers. Later on, DaimlerChrysler used this car as the basis for the Chrysler Crossfire, which was available for the 2004-2008 model years (after the SLK had gone to a new platform). When Mercedes-Benz sets its sights on something, it is usually not denied. These red-and-black leather seats are pretty snazzy. These engines are easier to find now than when I wrote the definitive guide to cheap junkyard superchargers, so I'll need to pull one and learn its secrets. You could get this car with a manual transmission, but this one (like nearly all U.S.-market SLKs) has the automatic. This 2.3-liter supercharged inline-four made 190 horsepower, which is about what the six-cylinder BMW Z3 produced. Nearly a quarter-century later, here's one of those '98s, photographed in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service yard.įor 2001, the SLK 320 and its V6 engine became available here, but the U.S.-market SLKs for 1998-2000 were all 230s. Its retractable hardtop established a trend for convertibles that only recently has ended as their complexity and weight (not to mention long-term maintenance) weren't worth whatever benefits they possessed over increasingly improved cloth roofs. The first of those cars to arrive on our shores was the SLK 230, which debuted here as a 1998 model. For more than 20 years, the folks in Stuttgart built sporty roadsters based on the C-Class chassis, finally killing off the SLC during the 2020 model year.

Even if your body is well-covered, exposed hands can have a significant effect on your temperature. When your hands are exposed to the cold, heat loss occurs from radiation. Wearing gloves in cold weather reduces heat loss through insulation. You need good insulation paired with a lightweight fabric to help keep you comfortable. It's time to let the weather know you're not messing around. An outer layer becomes a necessity when the weather starts dropping below freezing (0✬). Wind, rain, snow-all the weather patterns you might expect when it gets cold. Outer layers are essential for blocking the forces of the environment. When the temperature starts to dip below 4✬, you'll want to wear multiple mid layers to provide better insulation. A proper mid layer can be added to your base layer or worn by itself. When choosing your mid layer, don't forget to consider rain, wind or snow, which can make it feel colder than the forecast. This layer is responsible for trapping heat between itself and the base layer. Nike's Dri-FIT Technology and targeted ventilation help keep sweat and rain away from your skin. When picking your base layer, breathability and moisture-wicking are a must. The ideal base layer allows you to add extra layers without overheating but also works on its own so you can remove extra layers if things change mid-run. However, not all probiotics are in need of refrigeration. This is why certain probiotic supplements require refrigeration to preserve their efficacy and will include clear instructions from the manufacturer regarding storage. In general, probiotic bacteria are naturally sensitive to heat and moisture, both of which can kill the specialized live organisms and render them ineffective. Multivitamins are generally designed to be best taken first thing in the morning, which is perfect to pair with the probiotic you take with breakfast. Not to worry though, because in most cases, taking probiotics should not affect the effectiveness of other supplements like your daily multivitamin. What about taking it with your multivitamin, is that okay? Yes, we encourage it! You might be concerned that taking a probiotic at the same time as your morning vitamins or supplements might make one less effective. 1Īlso, if your probiotic causes you to feel a little gassy and bloated after taking it, (which is common when first taking probiotics) you may want to consider switching to taking it before bed, to minimize any public airing of these symptoms. If you take a probiotic at night when your bowel is less active, there is a chance that it may hang around, divide, and potentially get better integrated into your gut. If you think about it, you don’t usually wake up in the middle of the night to have a bowel movement. While we recommend taking a probiotic with your morning breakfast, there are some who prefer taking it before bed, because the gut is pretty inactive at night. We think that taking probiotics at any time is better than not taking them at all, but taking probiotics at the right time can optimize the health benefits. We suggest you review the labels for the best information on the product you are taking. And some supplement products use special coating techniques to enable transit through the intestines. Again, some strains are not hypersensitive to stomach acid and can be taken at any time. Fewer bacteria have been shown to survive in “fasted” than in fed subjects. Food dilutes stomach acid to levels that bacteria can survive. They should be taken with food because there are very few strains of bacteria that can withstand the harsh acidity of an empty stomach. In general, probiotics should be taken with food. Read the “suggested use” statement on your probiotic supplement label for best results. Some probiotic supplements that also contain prebiotics could lead to some initial bloating and gas, so you may want to take these before bedtime. That being said, there are hundreds of probiotic strains available in the market, and different strains may need to be administered at a specific time of the day. Food helps to buffer the effects of stomach acid it may also help to facilitate the passage of the probiotics through the stomach, and ensure they are well mixed with the stomach contents as they pass into the small intestines. We recommend taking your probiotic with a meal breakfast, lunch or dinner. Add a supplement to your routine at whatever time works best for you, but be consistent. Also, best practice is to take a daily dosage of probiotics to maintain good gut health balance. Taking probiotic supplements at a certain time of day (when stomach acidity may be more neutral) can help you to ensure the highest survival rates of your probiotic. But when should you take your probiotic…does that matter too? And, should you take it with food or on empty stomach? Let’s take a look at some tips for getting the best from your probiotics.ĭoes it matter when you take your probiotics? In short, yes it does matter!
